The Netflix movie Rustin is based on the true story of civil rights activist Baynard Rustin. Though he was the lead organizer of the March on Washington, as well as a friend and an influence on Martin Luther King Jr., Rustin's involvement in the civil rights movement was often downplayed, due to the fact that he was a gay man.
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, held on August 28, 1963, is arguably one of the most iconic moments in the history of the Civil Rights Movement. It was a powerful and pivotal event that brought together over 200,000 people from all walks of life, united in their demand for racial equality and economic justice.
While most people are familiar with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s famous "I Have a Dream" speech delivered that day, few are aware of the instrumental role played by Bayard Rustin in organizing the event. Rustin, a tireless activist and organizer, served as the key architect behind the scenes, meticulously planning and coordinating every aspect of the march.
Rustin's strategic brilliance and organizational skills were unparalleled. He brought together a diverse coalition of civil rights organizations, labor unions, and religious groups, ensuring that the march would be a powerful display of unity. Rustin understood that a successful mass demonstration required meticulous planning and attention to detail. From securing permits and coordinating logistics to managing the speaker lineup and mobilizing volunteers, he left no stone unturned.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Rustin's role in organizing the March on Washington was his ability to navigate the political complexities of the time. As an openly gay man and a former communist, Rustin faced significant challenges and scrutiny from both within and outside the movement. Yet, his unwavering commitment to the cause and his strategic acumen prevailed, and the march became a resounding success.
The impact of the March on Washington cannot be overstated. It not only put pressure on the federal government to enact meaningful civil rights legislation but also served as a catalyst for change, inspiring countless individuals to become actively involved in the fight for racial justice. And behind the scenes, orchestrating it all, was Bayard Rustin, the unsung hero whose contributions to the Civil Rights Movement deserve to be celebrated and remembered.
If you have not seen the movie "Rustin"on Netflix then you are doing yourself a disservice. This movie has a star studded cast including Colman Domingo as Bayard Rustin, Chris Rock as Roy Wilkins and Glynn Turman as A. Philip Randolph. The movie gave a detailed backstory about his life and what lead up to the March on Washington. It was so inspiring to see how organizers back then were planning events, phone banking, and canvassing same way we do today. Make sure you go see it and show support. Until next time my ATMS, stay safe out there.
